Pau Alcover
Pau Alcover’s project, in collaboration with Alessia Schoor and Cubro, posed a challenge because we were asked to take over an already started project. Upon receiving the assignment, we were provided with a predefined layout and Merbau tropical wood flooring which, thanks to its high resistance, allowed us to seamlessly extend the floor plane from the interior of the house to the terrace. These premises served as the starting point for our intervention, which focused on integrating and unifying the different spaces through a single element: glazed ceramic.
This versatile material has been incorporated into various elements, establishing a unique identity that is rooted in the local tradition and the needs of the inhabitants. One of the most notable uses is in the piece of furniture that separates the entryway from the living room. This volume not only acts as a filter between these areas but also incorporates storage and a seating area.
In the kitchen, smooth glazed ceramic pieces were placed on the countertop and sink. In contrast, on the backsplash, pieces with a shape reminiscent of the original structure of the house, made up of curved ceramic vaults, were chosen. Here, the ceramic contrasts with brushed aluminum cabinets, creating an aesthetic that is both modern and traditional. Similarly, the dining area features a table with a base made from curved pieces in the same tone, topped with a solid wood tabletop that matches the floor.
In the bathrooms, the same pieces used in the kitchen were applied, this time in a greenish tone. Finally, glazed ceramic is used as a baseboard around the perimeter of the house, reinforcing the idea of continuity between the different rooms and creating a visual cohesion across the project.
Thus, our intervention reinterprets construction strategies rooted in the Mediterranean culture, establishing a continuity with the construction tradition of the region. Here, luxury is understood as something that dispenses with superficiality and is made to last, seeking simplicity and ensuring a coherent whole. The glazed ceramic, in its multiple applications, not only provides functionality and aesthetics but also reflects the Mediterranean essence of the proposal.
